Mike “Damp” Damphousse is a seasoned entrepreneur, executive, and one of the foremost practitioners of Category Design—a business discipline that teaches companies to define and dominate new markets rather than competing in existing ones. With over three decades of experience as a founder, CEO, CMO, investor, and advisor, he has developed a reputation for helping leaders escape the “comparison trap” and instead build categories where they are the only logical choice.

Damphousse’s career is rooted in a hard-won insight he gained in the 1990s: having a great product is not enough. His startup at the time had excellent technology but failed because the market had not been conditioned to understand the new category he was trying to create. This experience set him on a path to understand the mechanics of category creation, leading him to co-found Category Design Advisors and co-author The Category Creation Formula. He is also a key voice behind the Category Pirates movement, which provides training and resources through its Category Design Academy app.

His philosophy challenges conventional business wisdom. Damphousse argues that “positioning” is dangerous because it implies positioning against somebody else—you are playing by someone else’s rules. The goal, he contends, is not to be better, but to be different. Category winners, as research from the seminal book Play Bigger shows, capture roughly 75% of the economic value in their category. They achieve this by defining a new problem and solution, creating a “category point of view” (POV) that acts as the company’s constitution, guiding everything from product development to hiring.

At LTSP26, Mike Damphousse will be demonstrating his latest work: a new software platform in its Beta phase that automates powerful Category Design coaching. This tool aims to make the principles of category creation—including framing a market, naming a category, and building a POV—accessible and actionable for a wider audience. By automating the coaching process, the software promises to help leaders bypass the “trendslop” of generic advice and instead build a defensible, long-term strategic position that defines the future of their industry.
